The Discovery Healthy Company Index is the first survey of its kind to find out how healthy South African employees – and companies – are.
Discovery has partnered with the University of Cambridge and RAND Europe to design and implement the Index to assess the health status of corporate South Africa to better understand the burden of disease and prevalence of risk factors, so these can be reduced with the support of employers.
1. Get your CEO or HR director's permission for your company to participate.
2. Register Online
3. You will then receive an email from us with the survey details and instructions of how to complete it.
4. We'll also send you regular emails and updates to let you know what you need to do and when you need to do it by.
* Your company must have at least 50 full-time employees with internet and email access.
* You do not have to be a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme to participate.
Your company must have at least 50 full-time employees with internet and email access. Your CEO or HR director must give permission for your company to take part. You do not need to be a member of the Discovery Health Medical Scheme to complete the survey. Participation is free.
To ensure statistical significance of the results, each company must attain a minimum employee participation rate related to its size. The participation rate will be confirmed after registration.
Once you're registered, a representative from your company (a senior HR manager or equivalent) will complete an online corporate health assessment and provide employees’ email addresses. This will include details such as the number of employees at your company, the health facilities, policies and benefits currently offered by your organisation.
Employees will then be invited to complete an online employee health assessment, which asks about health, lifestyle habits and stress levels. Once they've completed the questionnaire, employees automatically receive a customised personal health report, which will include their Vitality Age and highlight their biggest health risks.
After your employees have completed the online survey, you will receive a report outlining your company's results, which will include:• Factors affecting employees' risk for contracting a chronic disease through their lifestyle choices
• How many of your employees are currently living with a chronic disease
• Lifestyle behaviours affecting the health of your employees
• How motivated your employees are to become healthier
• The levels of stress your employees are experiencing and how well they are able to manage them
• The average Vitality Age of your employees.
Your results will also be benchmarked against other companies across various industries.
The employer survey takes place from 2 May – 2 August 2014.
Company registration closes on 31 July 2014.
The employee survey will take place from 14 July – 22 August 2014.
Individuals will receive their report immediately after completing the survey, and companies will receive their reports in November, when the results of the survey are announced.
The Healthy Company Index is a great tool to measure and manage health risks within your company and understand how health impacts productivity.
You'll get a set of practical recommendations to help you take the next steps to workplace wellness.

South Africa doesn't have much wellness data to assess the impact of the burden of chronic disease and poor lifestyle choices; and very little research has been conducted on how companies and employers approach wellness in the workplace. This survey will provide insights into these questions and help formulate plans and policies to help more people make better health choices.
Results will show:
• The burden of chronic diseases of lifestyle in South African companies
• The prevalence of wellness facilities in the South African workplace
• To what extent South African employees engage in healthy behaviour and activities
• An estimate of how many South African employees are at risk for chronic diseases of lifestyle.
Your company's name will only be published if you are ranked in the top five of any of the award categories. If you are not in the top five your name will not be published and only you will know your ranking. You will know your ranking compared to all the companies that participate as well as those in your industry.
Employee contact details will be treated confidentially and all parties exposed to the data will sign strict non-disclosure agreements. All companies that qualify will receive a consolidated report so that employees' privacy is guaranteed. Once the survey is complete, none of the parties involved will keep any employee contact information.
Your results will be used to compile academic research on the health of South African employees. Your company results will not be disclosed individually unless you are ranked in the top five of any of the award categories. This research will help develop a set of industry norms for the South African market.
Neither your company nor your employee details will be used for anything other than this survey. All information submitted will be used only for the purposes of academic research. It will never be passed on to other parties or used for marketing purposes.
Absolutely nothing: there is no entry fee for taking part in the Discovery Healthy Company Index.
For confidentiality reasons it's best to report at a company level. If you are a holdings company, you may want each of your group companies to register for the survey independently in order for us to provide reports per company.
As the survey will be completed online, it is necessary for participants to have access to both email and the internet. To be eligible for a report and be in the running for an award, at least 37 employees should complete the survey.
Vitality Age gives an estimate of a person's health by looking at certain health risk factors. It calculates the impact of your body mass index, activity levels, eating habits, smoking status, alcohol consumption and stress levels on quality of life and mortality risk. A person with many risk factors will have a Vitality Age that is older than his or her actual (chronological) age, and than someone with fewer risk factors.
Vitality Age was developed in conjunction with scientists at the University of Cape Town and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.
